Impact Award
EMS Impact Award
The intent of this award is to recognize and honor an individual who has made an
extraordinary, significant and lasting contribution to the Emergency Medical Services System
in the State of Connecticut. This award was established in honor of Dr. A.E. Hertzler Knox for
his lasting contributions to the EMS System in the State of Connecticut. This award is not
intended to be awarded on an annual basis.
History:
A.E. Hertlzer Knox, MD was the Medical Director of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company in
the 1970’s and 1980’s and was appointed to the Ad-Hoc Connecticut Advisory Council on
Emergency Medical Services, which published a report of recommendation to the Governor
entitled “Emergency Medical Services in Connecticut, a Blueprint for Change”.
In 1978, Dr. Knox assumed the position of Acting Director of the Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services until a permanent Director was hired. Dr. Knox was instrumental in reformatting the Advisory Council, including the establishment of a State Medical Advisory Committee, of which he was the first Chair. In 1980, Dr. Knox became the first Medical Director for the Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services and provided physician input and coordination for the Agency.
